Reading Music

Learning to read music is the hardest part of playing any instrument. All students in the beginning program are expected to work at reading the notes and other symbols on the pages that we will work on.

Reading music is much the same as reading words on a page. Notes are introduced a few at a time and students work on these new notes during the week while practicing at home.

Beginning students will read either the Treble clef, the Bass clef, or the Percussion clef. Flute, Clarinet, Alto Sax, Trumpet, and Violin all read the Treble Clef. The Trombone reads the Bass Clef. Snare Drum will read the Percussion Clef.

Students may write in the names of the notes in the beginning, but this is not encouraged for a long period of time. Once the reading of the notes is mastered students can concentrate more on the technique of the instrument in later years.
