Approaches to Learning (ATL) Skills

From IBO: Approaches to Learning & Content

6. MYP unit planning_ Approaches to learning, content.mp4

Through the Approaches to Learning skills, students develop skills that are relevant across disciplines, help them “learn how to learn,” and develop the self-knowledge they need to become lifelong learners. The ATL skills are necessary to meet the objectives of the MYP subject areas and the personal project, and they prepare students for the rigors of future courses like the IB Diploma Programme, AP courses, and other academic areas.

Some of the key questions to be answered by students with respect to ATL skills include the following.

  • What are my present skills in this area and what evidence do I have of my development?

  • What skills can I improve?

  • What new skills can I learn?

The ATL skills remains the SAME from grades 6-10 (Years 1-5 of the program). The complexity of the skill increases as defined by the learning experiences and summative assessment task(s). Teachers should consider the age and appropriate skill level for their students.
