To earn one unit of high school credit, the student must pass both years and the Local Regional Assessment exam given at the end of grade 8. The primary communication goals are listening to and speaking the language. Skills are developed so that the student can converse with a person who knows only the target language. We emphasize the areas of socializing, providing and obtaining information, expressing personal feelings and opinions, and persuasion. Students will learn to obtain information from materials written in the target language, including short notes, messages, posters, advertisements and texts from print, and be able to write short, informal notes and messages. The development of cross-cultural skills and understandings is an integral component of instruction. Students learn to respect and appreciate a culture other than their own by being introduced to different perspectives, values, gestures and traditions.
