The student understanding of the BSW Standard:
In this BSW standard a holistic approach involves examining all social factors of a person's life, rather than focusing on the next persons. Social workers who practice this approach may examine their client's behaviour by considering the following factors such as living environment, family, culture and community. Whereby the family is concerned Regardless i if the social worker is counselling an entire family or just an individual itself, understanding the family dynamics and issues is the key to understanding how the individual's community is and behaves. Family behaviour may provoke the individuals' ways especially when the client's family has a history of physical or emotional abuse. The community also plays a huge role in the lives of the client because many people can be influenced by those they work or socialize with. Attitudes and ideas expressed throughout the workplace of the client or inner circle of friends may cause people to question their beliefs and opinions leading to significant changes in behaviour and can also be easily peer pressured to fit in or to deal with certain cases. The groups that one deals with can also affect the way an individual moves and performs. In the forms of culture, the background can often shed the light on how a person was raised, their religious beliefs and their personal priorities. Culture may also define family structures and how the individual's family was raised and can dictate how the family interacts with each other inside and outside their homes. With holistic approach, social workers can view all major factors of the client's life to better determine underlying issues that may cause issues with the client's mental health. The social worker should formulate an effective plan to help their client overcome challenges (A holistic view of Social Work, 2019).
