SELF REFLECTIVE JOURNAL
Conducting mezzo practice was somehow challenging as the student was required to facilitate a therapeutic group and it was not easy for the student to find a therapeutic group. I am hesitant to facilitate group work as it is a combination of people from different backgrounds who share common challenges. I learned that it is important to build a safe and empathetic environment for group members as a base of the helping process because conflict arises in the group and conflicting ideas might arise but what is most important in group cohesion. Additionally, I learned about the importance of cultural competence in addressing the diverse needs of the group members. I realized that I could have approached some situations with more confidence and assertiveness. There were moments I hesitated to voice my ideas fearing they might not be well received.
Messo intervention has significantly enhanced my understanding of my role as a social worker. Although I am not confident in facilitating a group, I perceive myself as culturally sensitive and I know that in every setting treating everyone with respect, worth, and dignity and showing a non-judgmental attitude is paramount. I believe I excelled in fostering open communication within groups. By encouraging group members to share their thoughts and feelings. My ability to listen actively also contributed to more productive discussions, allowing the group to achieve its goals. Moving forward I recognize the need to facilitate groups with older persons so that I can understand what is lacking as I feel inadequate in facilitating a therapeutic group.
