Sub-standard 5.1 Demonstrate self-awareness regarding personal and cultural values, beliefs, traditions, and biases and how these might influence the ability to develop relationships with people and to work with diverse population groups.
These standards focus on the ability of the student social worker to outline the importance of understanding the cultural background of people to form meaningful relationships with a diverse population. According to Hepworth (2010), forming relationships is the cornerstone of any helping process. This means that social workers must be aware of their backgrounds' influence on their interactions and ensure that they do not impose their values on the clients. By acknowledging and reflecting on these influences, social workers can foster empathy and cultural humility stated Hepworth, (2010).
The student social work demonstrated cultural sensitivity among the group consisted diverse group members. The student created an inclusive environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing their thoughts and used open-ended like how to show respect to someone means to you. This opens a space for each member to contribute by sharing their voices. The SSW demonstrated fairly competence and rates herself 3/5 as she understands the is space for improvement.drive.google.com/file/d/1B2iIToQaBftwfobHDkr1B1t3_loCUXtm/view?usp=drive_link
Sub-standard 5.5. ability to form relationships with and treat all persons with respect and dignity irrespective of such persons’ cultural and ethnic beliefs, gender, nationality, language, religion, disability, and sexual orientation.
Relationships are central to social work practice (Rogers, et al, (2017). Relationships help social workers to build trust with their clients. The differences influenced the student’s ability to develop a relationship with a diverse population in such a way that the student social worker understands that people might have the same body features, but they have differences. The student social worker understands that when she is with clients, she needs to embrace the value of being unique. The student social worker acknowledges that diversity does not have to be visible people can be unique in their values and experience therefore that raised awareness to the student social worker to be careful about how she approaches her clients. According to Thompson (2016), diversity is seen as an asset, a positive feature of society that enriches our experiences. This means diversity is something that helps society to see their experiences as something that influences their well-being. Furthermore, the author believes that diversity should be valued, confirmed, and even celebrated. In this case he emphases the fact that people should be proud of diversity and accept diversity because it is something that we need to acknowledge and celebrate.
The student understood these standard emphases the importance of being culturally sensitive to a diverse group. In addition, the student knew that when she was facilitating the group of grade 4 learners she was aware of the diversity in the group. Therefore, she treated everyone with mutual respect and showed a non-judgmental attitude and she attended to every member's perspective with empathy and honest manner. She noticed that the facilitator was aware of diversity in her group selection. This was demonstrated when the student was resolving the conflict in the group she was not biased, just because the group had a majority of males, but she did not favor the females but rather treated them equally. The student is fully competent with the substandard and rates herself 4/5.drive.google.com/file/d/1B2iIToQaBftwfobHDkr1B1t3_loCUXtm/view?usp=drive_link
