Digital skills help you use technology to find, manage, and share information. E.g., using devices like computers and smartphones, browsing the internet, and using apps like email and social media. These skills are important for College, University, future jobs, and daily life.
The College is here to help you build digital skills for work and career growth. As technology changes, employers want people who can use tools like email, Microsoft 365, and Teams confidently.
To help you get started, the College encourages you to use the JISC Digital Discovery Tool.
The Jisc Digital Discovery tool is a short online questionnaire to help you:
Find out what digital skills you already have
See where you can improve
Get a personal report with tips
It only takes about 20 minutes and covers six key areas of digital skills, like using software, online tools, and working safely online. On completing the questionnaire, you will receive an individual report showing your current digital skill levels divided into six elements of digital capability, and an indicator of your current level of competence in each.
The six areas of digital capability are;
Connecting with others.
Finding, organising and storing information and data.
Using the software needed for your studies.
Creating and using digital materials and methods.
Making the most of our available digital learning tools.
Keeping yourself and others safe and well online.
We recommend using the Digital Skills Discovery Tool, part of the Digital Skills Framework, to help you evaluate your current levels of digital skills.
It is a self-assessment tool, which you can access as soon as you receive your student number and go through your full college IT enrolment.
After answering a range of questions, you will receive a personalised report (for your eyes only) which will help you identify your areas of strength as well as areas that you may wish to work on further and then help to find resources to develop those skills.
The Digital Discovery tool is part of the Digital Skills Framework, which in turn also supports the College City Attributes for the 'Digitally Prepared Student'.
Identify skills to develop using the Digital Discovery Tool.
Find appropriate learning resources using the Resource finder tool.
Use resources to develop your digital skills.
You could also discuss with your lecturer the skills you should prioritise.
At City of Glasgow College we promote and support the College City Attributes. These are a set of essential personal and digital skills we want all our students to develop, so they are well-prepared for work or higher education, they underpin essential Digital Skills and focus on ensuring all of our students are Digitally Prepared.
The digitally prepared City Student;
Understands the digital world.
Embraces modern technologies.
Cyber security aware.
Virtually Interconnected.
Ensure your digital capabilities are fully recognised and accredited, e.g. by discussion and acknowledgement in guidance sessions, inclusion on your CV or LinkedIn profile, and accreditation with badges or certificates.
You should leave college with a digital portfolio of your achievements.
