Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a technology that enables machines to perform tasks that usually require human intelligence, such as understanding language, recognising patterns, and making decisions. For students. it's important to use AI ethically and responsibly.
While AI can be a powerful tool for learning and research, ensuring that the work you submit is your own is crucial. Relying too heavily on AI-generated content can lead to misinformation, and plagiarism (using someone else's work as your own without proper credit) a disciplinary procedure.
Therefore, it is important to remember:
Do not copy AI-generated content;
Always use AI as a tool to help you understand and learn, but make sure to write your own original work.
Verify information;
Double-check the accuracy of the information provided by AI, as it can sometimes be incorrect, out of date or biased.
Use AI ethically;
Ensure that your use of AI is fair, and transparent, and respects the rights of others.
Develop your own skills;
Relying too much on AI can hinder your learning. Use it to enhance your understanding, not replace your effort.
Avoid plagiarism;
Submitting AI-generated content as your own work is considered plagiarism and can have serious academic consequences.
If you use AI, refer to guidance on how to cite and give attribution and recognition for any support you get from an AI tool. You can use Cite Them Right to support you in referencing AI tools and you can sign up to a workshop on how to do this, via the Skills Development service, available via the student portal CityLife, or clicking the Book a workshop link at the top of this page.
By following these guidelines, you can use AI effectively while maintaining academic integrity.
City of Glasgow College is dedicated to maintaining Academic Integrity in all our educational activities. We have joined other UK universities and colleges in a commitment to uphold and promote academic integrity. This involves pledging to adhere to the core values of honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility in our work. We also expect our students to embrace these values in their studies and to properly credit the work or ideas of others when used as references.
Academic misconduct is a serious issue that impacts you, the reputation of our College, and the entire educational sector. It can take many forms, including the use of essay and degree mills, plagiarism, collusion between students, and the use of forged or altered qualification certificates.
The College follows the Jisc Principles for the use of AI in FE colleges.

AI tools come in two main types: protected and unprotected:
Protected AI tools are designed with robust security measures to ensure user data and interactions are safe from unauthorised access. These tools prioritise privacy and compliance with regulations, making them suitable for sensitive applications like healthcare and finance.
Unprotected AI tools, on the other hand, may lack stringent security protocols, potentially exposing user data to risks, for example, Unprotected AI tools are often free or have free versions available
As a student at City of Glasgow College, you have access to Microsoft Copilot as part of your College 365 account.
