Unlike elementary basic education, higher education is seen as a private commodity than a public good, which means there is a perception that it benefits the individual more than benefiting the society at large. Hence governments have invested less money in higher education system. This has made university education expensive for the student. Students take education loans and consequently this debt has increased the pressure for graduates to have an immediate job placement. Universities have also responded and reoriented their course focus to workforce preparation. Workforce preparation has been pursued by gearing the university programme specifically to industry practice. This happens by narrowing their curriculum for achieving greater specialization demanded by the industry. Many such industry specific university courses exist today.
