Reflection:
The initial (very first) print was not functional at all. We 3D printed it as an assembled piece instead of separate pieces to be assembled post-printing, which of course prevented its movement completely. For this mockup, a second attempt, we printed each of the three pieces (rod, main body, and lever) separately with the intention of assembling them. A couple of issues were encountered:
- The 3D printer had a filament jam three times. The print had to be restarted three times. On the fourth attempt at printing, we used a different printer. If this print did not succeed, we would not have a completed mockup before the deadline. Despite having planned for failed prints by starting the printing 3 days in advance, our time was cut extremely close. Thankfully, the print was successful, and we have a working product.
- We have learned to EXPECT FAILED PRINTS. While we did initially plan for this print to fail, we had exactly the needed amount of time to finish the print. We should allocate at least 4-5 days to printing, even for a print that only takes 3 hours to complete, because it WILL fail and we need a buffer of time when it happens.
- If a printer jams, the first reaction should NOT be restarting the print on the same printer, but instead to use a different printer. However, if possible, the print should be continued on the same printer, not restarted.
- Already, some modifications need to be made to this mockup:
- First, a very small part of the sliding mechanism had broken while removing bridging material, so that part needs to be thickened in the design for more durability.
- Also, the entire main mechanism needs to be widened in order to allow more clearance for the lever to fit in between the rod and the main body of the mechanism.
- The jaws need some sort of rubber or frictional material to further prevent the clamp from slipping.
- The mechanism needs to be modified in order to be locked into certain positions.
- While the top jaw does have a curved and a flat side, it does not rotate, which is another function we want to add to the design.
Overall, while this very early mockup is rough and barely functions, some changes could lead to a promising product.
