Project Reflections
Project as a whole
This is my first year at Meadows Valley, so this was also my first project that I was a part of. I think the project went great for second grade! The students loved being able to decorate the pumpkins and put them in the community where they could show their parents their pumpkins. I decided to use a nontypical way to decorate the pumpkins which is more of an decoupage style. Students had access to tissue paper, glue, and clear coating spray. Students all individually designed a plan for how they wanted to decorate their pumpkins, and they also researched the best way to get the paper to stick to the pumpkin. The unfortunate downside to this project was that after the pumpkins were displayed in the community, a group of people went through town and smashed them. This was difficult for some kids because they were extremely disappointed, but we used the opportunity to talk about choices and also brainstorm a way to keep this from happening in the future. Most students reflected on their project and had positive takeaways, but they also admitted that they should have taken more time to plan their design.
Exemplar Student Project Examples
Both of these students made a drawing of their plan on how to decorate their pumpkin and wrote a detailed material list. Both students also used their drawing to guide their decorations on their pumpkins, and they turned out extremely similar to their plans.
