Née Sharon Lee Meyers born in 1941, Jackie DeShannon is a Hazel-raised singer and songwriter. DeShannon first sang country music on local radio stations at age six and was hosting her own radio show by age 11. At 16, she signed to a New York record label as a budding rockabilly artist, then befriended Elvis Presley. She signed with Liberty Records in 1960 as "Jackie DeShannon." During her career, she supported the Beatles on their first US tour in 1964.
She had a big hit in 1965 with Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "What the World Needs Now Is Love," peaking at No. 7 on the US charts. Her million-selling album "Put a Little Love In Your Heart" followed in 1969. DeShannon is credited for co-writing "Bette Davis Eyes" with Donna Weiss in 1974, a number-one single for Kim Carnes in 1981. The two shared a Grammy Award for Song of the Year. In 2010, Jackie DeShannon was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
