Literacy does not just mean reading. A quality English Language Arts program for elementary children includes reading, writing, comprehension, and understanding rules of language. Literacy takes time and needs to be integrated into classroom learning and teaching appropriately. The tasks are also very important to help teach children. Repetition is beneficial, but it can also get very boring for students, therefore, repetition and new tasks are needed (Bainbridge). Children also need to be exposed to a variety of learning opportunities where they interact and use different types of texts other than only books. They should have exposure to digital forms, newspapers, visual posters, etc. When teaching literacy to children I need to be aware of the differences between phonological awareness, phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle, etc. (Lynch et. al., Chapter 3).
Another important feature in creating a quality English Language Arts program is an extensive classroom library reading space which Creating space for children's literature by Serafini made me aware about. Students need the opportunity to explore and engage in their own reading space.
A quality ELA program consists of teaching children the rules of language, how to acquire information, evaluate it, and use it, how to construct meaning from various kinds of texts and how to communicate effectively.
Pedagogical STEAM Statement
STEAM is an approach that integrates Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics to foster inquiry and critical thinking in students.
STEAM allows teachers to act as guides as student inquire about the world around them. I believe STEAM teaching should involve more project-based learning and inquiry-based learning as they both emphasize key components in teaching and learning. I think that STEAM, in addition to project-based and inquiry-based learning, allow the students to become more independent thinkers because they are able to be more actively involved. I find that students are able to do, create, explore, and engage more into their learning with teaching in the integrated STEAM approach. It fosters the ability to have components of each students strengths and interests. Many STEAM activities can also be group based which allows students to work collaboratively with others.
Students want to learn ...
I believe students learn because they are fascinated by gaining more of an understanding for a particular subject. Most students are encouraged to learn when their teacher is enthusiastic and interesting to the student and about the subject material. Students want to learn because they have a curiosity about life, hence, the reason younger children constantly ask "why". Students want to learn because they want to know more and gain more knowledge about everything.
I also think part of students learning is for approval and positive reinforcement from their teachers. They are more likely to want to learn if they feel recognized and valued.
Students as learners ...
I believe students learn best when they are motivated to learn by seeing the importance of the information presented in the classroom. Students are more engaged when they are interested in the material. I think students must contribute to classroom interactions to share and gain knowledge from each other.
I know that all students are capable of learning, but every student has their own rate of gaining knowledge. Each student is their own individual person which means they learn in their own unique way.
Accomplishments for Teaching ...
When I begin to teach, I hope to use various teaching methods and approaches in order to benefit every student. A variety of teaching methods will also help to create an interesting environment that the students will think is fun and worthy of their time. I hope to accomplish this so that my students can have more options and better opportunities in life.
I hope to leave a positive lasting impression on my students. I want to create compassionate learners that are motivated to make a difference in their learning or maybe even somewhere else. I want to make sure they know I care about them by always being there for them and not just in an educational sense. A reminder to myself will be about liking and caring for every child. My goal is to be a guide in their learning adventures.
Learning environments and the subjects ...
I believe an interactive classroom environment is an important factor to effective learning. When students are participating in discussions, they are more likely to be engaged and learn. I think that a learning environment should encourage students to develop the understanding instead of just learning.
Learning environments are an important aspect of being a successful teacher and having successful learners. Each subject has to be interesting with in-depth concepts so the students are more willing to understand. I think each subject varies with the teaching method and learning environment since it is depending on the unit/concept that the students are learning.
My teaching philosophy aligns with progressivism.
I agreed with the statement, in Chapter 6 of Educational Foundations in Canada, for progressivism that teachers create learning environments and then guide students to reflect on their learning experiences. Also, I agreed that learning experiences should not be set before determining students' interests. Progressivism was fostered more into my philosophy after spending more time in a classroom. I believe in emphasizing problem-solving while also addressing creative self-expression. I believe it is extremely important as a teacher to know your students well.
