My goal for this semester is to use the POS to provide opportunities for all students to develop a knowledge and understanding of, and respect for, the histories, cultures, languages, contributions, perspectives, and experiences of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit (PL8). I will do this by ensuring that I create lessons and learning experiences for students. My goal is to integrate First Nations, Métis, and Inuit knowledge throughout various subjects. By the end of my practicum, I want to be able to say I have done this at least three times in different subjects.
I feel that my growth for this semester has been including opportunities for students to develop an understanding and knowledge about First Nations, Metis, and Inuit. I am slowly becoming more confident with incorporating these opportunities into learning experience that connect across subjects. Throughout my practicum, I slowly became more comfortable discussing and reflecting on Indigenous perspectives when I realized that they are not meant to be big ideas, but more integral parts of discussion and thinking. In some of our English lessons, we were discussing onomatopoeias and searching for them within Robert Munsch books. I ended up using one of Robert Munsch' s books that is also translated into the Algonquin language and has an Indigenous illustrator. At the end of the lesson, we contributed to our class onomatopoeia list by reflecting on sounds that we would hear if we were living off the land. Students came up with some great onomatopoeias and explained where they would hear this sound.
My goal in the future is to still provide opportunities for my students to develop an understanding and knowledge about First Nations, Metis, and Inuit. I do need to ensure that I am making authentic, meaningful connections while also purposefully including the opportunities. My plan is to try to get out of my head and to stop focusing and thinking they need to be big, elaborate opportunities.
My initial goal for this practicum was to understand and know my students in order to determine their developmental needs and differences as learners to help plan better learning experiences for them (PL2).
My growth for this practicum was my ability to really get to know the students and how they learned best. By being able to spend every day with them and getting to teach them 50% of the time allowed me to enrich their learning experiences to their differences. I was able to personally connect with them which made planning for their learning goals that much easier.
My future goal is to try to develop learning goals that require more deep thinking (PL7). I want students to be able to use their higher-order thinking skills with the planned activities and assignments that are aligned with learning goals. When assignments require deep thinking, students are more willing to participate and be engaged in their learning. I can improve this by less teacher-directed instruction where students are still appropriately challenged within the classroom. This is a goal that I know I will be working on throughout my career, but I can start working on it now.
My grade 3 students had to plan their structure design and after testing they had to write what they would improve.
