As a teacher, it is important to create an environment where children feel safe and trusting. They are often more likely to engage in a classroom where they feel this way with teachers and peers. I would say they are more likely to succeed when they want to be there and are capable of learning to their best ability. It is also crucial to have a learning environment that is nurturing. All teachers should contribute and help their students grow. Also, the environment should be inclusive. This includes learning styles and environments. The best way for students to participate and learn is when they feel included in the learning process and when taught in different ways.
My initial goal for this practicum is to use appropriate universal and targeted strategies and supports to address students' strengths, learning challenges, and areas for growth (IE5). I will use information about universal and targeted strategies to inform each of my lessons. I will be using UDL and RTI strategies for differentiation. My hope is to learn more strategies to support students.
I feel that my growth throughout this practicum has really been getting to know the students and being able to provide them with the best supports possible to help them learn. I learned more about universal and targeted strategies through my exceptional students course which allowed me to address students' strengths, learning challenges, and areas of growth. One of my students particularly learned better from auditory/visual and kinesthetic experiences so I tried to incorporate those as much as possible. In Science, we watched lots of videos and did experiments as a class and in groups in order to best support this particular student's strengths. As a final celebration of learning, students were to create a musical instrument and this student was able to excel at explaining and designing their instrument because of the kinesthetic experience and auditory/visual prior knowledge. These strategies were also beneficial to all students as it provided different experiences for each of their learning styles.
My goal for the future is to research more and use more universal and targeted strategies and supports that will benefit and address students' strengths, learning challenges and areas for growth (IE5). I currently have a good understanding of strategies and often incorporates students' personal and cultural strengths in my lesson planning. However, I want to be more systematic in acquiring information about UDL and RTI strategies.
These are all examples of some of the various learning experiences that students indulged in throughout our Science unit.
My initial goal for this practicum was to create and manage effective classroom routines and procedures to ensure that students are able to have positive behaviours towards learning (E3).
My growth for this semester was for sure my classroom management as it was consistently maintained. I followed the routines that my mentor teacher created with the students, which made it much easier for them to follow. If students were off task, I would get down to their level and talk to them quietly, allowing students to keep their dignity and not be embarrassed. I now feel that classroom management is one of my strengths as I learned very quickly which students required additional support as well as which students required challenges. This all ultimately helped with my classroom management.
In the future, I want to focus on working to create a respectful and ethical learning community that encourages learners to take risks, build trust, embrace diversity, and increase self-confidence (E4). Some of my students had anxiety and did not want to share in class. There were also lots of students who needed constant reassurance, therefore, I would like to work on creating a community of taking risks, building trust, and increasing confidence to help my students learn better and be more inclined to learn.
