As a teacher, you want to change your instructions to see success and enjoyment in others so that you can experience that crave you wished for. Being a teacher, there are many roles that need to be maintained professionally. There are expectations for conduct and competence associated with all professions but especially a teacher. Teachers are responsible for diagnosing educational needs, implementing instructional programs, and evaluating the progress of students. In relation to the profession, they act in a way that maintains the honour and dignity of a teacher.
My initial goal for practicum is to deeply think through seminar responses, lesson critiques, and weekly reflections (PR6). I want to connect theory and practice using examples in each reflection while linking classroom contexts. My goal is to try to complete each seminar response, lesson critiques, and weekly reflections connecting theory and practice and analyzing my professional identity. This will be completed by the end of my practicum.
I feel that my growth during this practicum was being able to intentionally connect my theory and practice by using explicit examples in each reflection while linking it to classroom contexts. One of my examples relates to our reading about teaching and incorporating Indigenous perspectives. I analyzed my feelings about learning more about Indigenous knowledge, but am still anxious and intimated about integrating it into students' learning experiences. I connected these feelings to my classroom context and a recent experience I had with my students getting them to take on an Indigenous perspective.
My goal for my future practice is to work on supporting student achievement by engaging in collaborative approaches to capacity building in First Nations, Metis, and Inuit education (PR8). I will achieve this by seeking out more opportunities for collaboration in FNMI education while also actively engaging in professional conversations with colleagues.
My initial goal for this practicum was to be more involved with the school and the 'behind the scenes' development of teaching. Prior to this practicum, I have not been involved with school PD's and I am excited to be a part of that and learn from more practicing teachers.
I feel that my growth this practicum was being involved more with others to discuss students' learning. Each Friday we had professional development where our school would get together with all teachers or grade teams gathering and discuss student learning to either go over assessment or learning goals. I also taught Physical Education to my class and another grade three class which allowed me to connect with another mentor teacher. Another growth was taking feedback from my mentor teacher in regards to each lesson and applying it to future lessons. I took each and every suggestion and gave it a try, some worked and some did not, but I implemented the change.
I plan to continue to identify specific changes in my lessons through mentor teacher feedback and my reflections and then implement them to future lessons (PR4). I also want to continue to work with a community of practicing teaches to focus on students' learning whether this is through team teaching more, PD days, workshops, or others (PR6).
An example of my mentor teacher's feedback which has my strengths or things she liked and her suggestions.
