Description
Immersed in multiple projects with a community-participatory and multidisciplinary evaluation science research group studying real-world lifestyle/ behavioral interventions partnered with community (including Indigenous) entities to prevent onset and progression of metabolic syndrome.
This was funded by an undergraduate student summer research grant (Vessie Heckbert Memorial Student Research Award; May - Aug 2022).
Skills
Community-based participatory research, ethics application, community consultation, study design
Poster presentation
Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry Summer Student Research Day, UAlberta (October 2022)
Description
Conceptualized and conducted a retrospective cohort study focused on the ED experiences (adverse events, e.g. restraints, behavioral interventions) of this marginalized population based on observations while working as a Peace Officer in Psychiatric Emergency; and disseminated findings with a published manuscript and multiple presentations. This work inspired an Addictions and Mental Health Patient Boarding in Emergency Departments scoping review.
Skills
Study design, chart review/ data collection, data analysis, article writing

Alberta Addiction & Mental Health Strategic Clinical Network core committee meeting (November 2020).
Description
Performed experiments, optimized protocols, analyzed results, and produced manuscripts/ presentations for a biochemistry project of an NSERC grant-holding laboratory studying microbiology. Experiments included bioinformatic survey to identify potential bacteriocins (small peptides produced by bacteria to kill other bacteria), production and purification of a peptides, and site directed ligase-independent mutagenesis to create plasmids containing mutations for amino acids suspected to be important for function of bacteriocin.
Skills
Bioinformatics, PCR mutagenesis, DNA isolation and purification, affinity chromatography, SDS PAGE, microbiology

Description
Performed experiments, optimized protocols, and produced data for a lab studying lipid dynamics. Explored HPTLC technique to provide groundwork for future undergraduate student projects and analyzed micrographs of melanocytes and compared under different conditions.
Skills
HPTLC, image analysis
Description
Performed experiments, learned how to use new lab equipment and software independently, and produced a manuscript and presentation while overcoming challenging circumstances (supervisor withdrawing partway through the semester). Used confocal microscopy and immunohistochemistry to locate and characterize the distribution of the glutamate receptor mGluR5 in the cortical astrocytes genetically altered mice.
Skills
Immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy, spatial statistics
Description
Collaborated, conceptualized, and executed a discrete research project with a team of 12 peers as part of a larger on-going study resulting in a manuscript and scientific presentation (unpublished). Conducted a literature review regarding the use of serum and serum starvation in cell culture, then performed a series of experiments to compare the relative gene expression of three different myogenic regulatory factors during myogenesis.
Poster presentation
Faculty of Science & Technology Research Days, Mount Royal University (April 2021)
Description
Organized and performed experiments with a group of four peers. Used immunocytochemistry and fluorescent microscopy to describe the localization of cytoskeletal filaments during the process of myogenesis (muscle generation).
Poster presentation
Undergraduate Research in Science Conference of Alberta (virtual, May 2020). Received 1st place in category and overall Grand Prize for Poster Presentation.
