The end of carrots and sticks -- moving toward a new motivational model.
First, look at the picture below.
Explanation of the image on the left:
In the old days, it was believed that you could motivate individuals (and, as it appears in the picture, donkeys also) in one of two ways. The carrot or the stick.
Positive motivations, such as recognition and rewards (both financial and otherwise) were generally grouped under the category of "carrots."
Meanwhile, negative rewards, like punishments and negative consequences, were generally called "sticks."
Social scientists have demonstrated time and time again that these two motivations frequently fail. [If you want to watch a great animation describing the candle test and the failures of carrot-and-stick style motivational tools, check out RSA's Animation of a lecture: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6XAPnuFjJc (11 minutes). Watching this video is not mandatory, but it is enjoyable--and will expose you to another way of doing stop motion animation.]
Lead by psychologists and social scientists, we are moving toward a better understanding of motivation. One researcher and author, Daniel Pink, describes an alternative method of motivation that focuses on scientifically-backed principles: Autonomy, Mastery, and Purpose.
Autonomy refers to your freedom, to a certain extent, to choose when to work, what direction to take, how much time to take, etc.
Mastery refers to the self-satisfaction achieved upon reaching mastery in a certain field; the quest for mastery can be a great motivator.
Purpose is perhaps the most important of all motivators, as a task can only be deeply rewarding if there is a higher purpose being served.
The reason that Advanced Video Production is being offered using this online system is to enable each student to have autonomous control over what fields he or she will select in order to pursue mastery for a purpose.
To finish this quest, answer these three questions in this Google Form:
uses your own words to explain the three terms: autonomy, mastery, and purpose,
lists some of the areas in which you might be interested in pursuing mastery, and
presents at least one purpose that would be compelling for you to create a video production (this could be a charity or philanthropic organization that you support, or a goal that you have, or something else)
