Less Lawn, More Garden for HOAs
The Project
A colleague in the Climatebase Fellowship proposed a capstone project to help homeowners' associations (HOAs) replace lawn areas with native plant gardens.
What I Did
Using what I had learned from a similar project with the Muddy Branch Alliance, I helped the team create messaging and an outreach plan that reflected why HOA leaders are interested in native plant gardens and what kinds of assistance they need to transition to sustainable landscaping.
The Deliverable
Within the 12-week span of the Fellowship, we created outreach materials, distributed the materials in our target region, and won bids to install gardens for several HOAs.
Nitrate Watch Strategic Plan
The Project
The Izaak Walton League wanted to launch a new community science project.
What I Did
I led the program team through a strategic planning process for the new initiative. Finding out at the last minute that the conference room with the whiteboard was not available, I grabbed an easel pad and wrote down a four-step framework. I then worked with the program staff to fill in the framework with guiding ideas and concrete action items.
The Deliverable
Using the plan we created in late 2022, we launched a new program and achieved results that surpassed everyone's expectations.
Email Checklist
The Project
The Izaak Walton sends as many as 22 emails per month - an average of one email per business day. As the Strategic Communications Manager, I'm responsible for making sure every email goes out on time and without errors.
What I Did
I created a system in Trello for tracking the status of every email. Each upcoming email gets a card on the Trello board, and each card automatically populates itself with a checklist. When the checklist is complete, it's safe to send the email.
The Deliverable
I've been at the Izaak Walton League for more than five years. Using the checklist, I've never needed to send an "apology and correction" email.
Elevator Speech Generator
The Project
The Muddy Branch Alliance is a small all-volunteer nonprofit. As the President, I wanted to create resources to help my directors explain what the organization does.
What I Did
I organized key facts and talking points and put them in a Google Doc in the organization's Drive. I promoted that resource to the directors repeatedly.
The Deliverable
The Elevator Speech Generator is publicly accessible so anyone can learn about the Muddy Branch Alliance.
