In the fall of 2017, Montgomery County, Maryland, became the first jurisdiction in the Western Hemisphere to declare a climate emergency. In the fall of 2019, Montgomery County convened a series of volunteer workgroups to begin creating the climate action plan.
I volunteered for the Community Engagement and Education Workgroup, then joined the Evidence-Based Communications subgroup. Working with my teammates to organize information on best practices, I contributed materials I had previously created about intention formation and theory of change. Together, we created a framework for communicating to County residents about adaptation and mitigation efforts and how they can get involved. We agreed that the key lenses for that framework were equity and human health.
We delivered our community engagement framework, in the form of a slide deck, in early 2020.
