The Choose Clean Water Coalition called for its member groups to place op-eds asking the states in the Chesapeake watershed to renew the Bay Agreement beyond its original expiration date in 2025.
I reviewed the talking points provided by the Coalition and organized the ones that were most important in my region. I asked the leader of a partner group to write the first draft of a joint op-ed. I smoothed out the wording of the draft and pitched the op-ed to an outlet I had connected with at a community event.
The editor responded the day after the pitch asking me to send the full op-ed. I followed up until the op-ed was published three weeks later, in July 2024. I let the Coalition and the partner group know that the op-ed was published, and we all promoted the op-ed on our respective channels.
The Izaak Walton League has a long history of promoting and celebrating outdoor recreation. Our new vision statement stresses that we want to help everyone enjoy time outdoors.
I proposed a magazine article about making outdoor recreation more accessible for people with disabilities. I used my network to find sources. I asked sources how they wanted to be interviewed. I interviewed sources in writing, over the phone, via Zoom, and by taking a walk in a park. I wrote the article and contributed several photographs.
The article was published in early 2024. I showed it to several partner groups, who were eager to share it with their own audiences.
In late 2020, the Izaak Walton League needed to articulate its priorities for the incoming Congress.
I translated materials created by the League's conservation director to produce a series of four blogs explaining the organization's priorities.
The blog post outlining our priorities for clean water was published in December 2020. In September 2022, the League and its partners quoted the blog post in an amicus brief to the Supreme Court.
Each fall, the Gaithersburg Environmental Affairs Committee plans its priorities for the coming year. Many of our priorities are advanced through community engagement.
After leading the Committee through the goal planning process, I wrote a pitch letter to a local media outlet suggesting an article that explains the Committee's priorities and invites the community to get involved.
The editor responded in less than five minutes asking me to write exactly what I wanted the outlet to print. The article was published in December 2023.
