Practice Code Review #1

Due: Wednesday, September 13th

Overview:

Successfully log into Upsource
Create a review and add comments to that review
Create a PDF of your review

Submission:

Completed code review PDFs should be uploaded to this folder on Google Drive. (See below for detailed submission instructions)

For this assignment, you will be getting to know our code review tool: Upsource.  The main purpose of this assignment is to give you a chance to get familiar with Upsource and practice creating a review on a technical level.  We will be discussing code review strategies and how to appropriately comment on code in the coming weeks.  For this first practice review, you don't need to worry too much about what your comments say, just that you are able to make them and share them in the appropriate format.

Steps for starting your practice review:

Open a browser and enter the following URL: https://upsource.mtholyoke.edu/
If this does not bring you directly to the login page, use the button in the upper right corner to navigate to the login screen
You should be able to log into Upsource using your MHC username and password (if this does not work, contact Barbara for assistance)
Follow the directions in the slideshow linked below to create a branch review
- Creating a Branch Review slideshow
Make comments within the review you've created
- Put comments specific to particular lines of code below those lines of code
- Add at least one comment to each .java file within the project
Add Barbara as a reviewer to your branch review
- Looking under the "Overview" options on the left side of the review, click the plus sign next to "Reviewers"
- Select "Barbara Rotundo" from the list of names available

Steps for submitting your practice review:

(Please note that these directions are specific to Chrome)

Install the PrintView Chrome Extension
- Download PrintView1.1.zip
- Unzip PrintView1.1, noting where on your computer you are putting it
- From the Chrome menu (top right of nav bar) go to ChromeSetting > More Tools > Extensions
- Be sure that “Developer mode” on the top right is checked
- Select "Load Unpacked Extension" (upper left)
- Navigate to and select the "PrintView1.1" folder you unzipped
- You should see the blue GEM icon appear on your chrome extensions bar
Return to the review you created in Upsource
Click the blue GEM extension icon, then select the "Open Java Files" option
All the .java files within the review should open, each in a separate tab
For each .java file tab do the following:
- Scroll to bottom of file (it initially only loads a limited number of lines, so this ensures it has loaded the whole file)
- Click the blue GEM extension icon, then select the "Print View" option
- Ctrl+P, then select the "Save as PDF" option
- Please use the following naming convention when saving each PDF: <your last name>_Practice1_<filename>.pdf
TO SUBMIT YOUR WORK: Upload your review PDF files to the Practice Code Review 1 folder on Google Drive

***If you get stuck with any part of this assignment, feel free to email Barbara for help or come by her office so that she can help you troubleshoot. Please try to at least log into Upsource before Monday (September 11) so that you have time to work out any technical issues with Barbara before the assignment is due.***

Accessing Upsource from off campus:

For security reasons, you will need to use a VPN when accessing UpSource from off campus. VPN instructions can be found on the CS Help Site.

Once you have completed the steps described on the Help Site, you should be able to access https://upsource.mtholyoke.edu/ as though you were on campus.
