the role of belongingess
Wednesday, October 11
Belonging is not always about whether you believe you can do something. It is also about whether you see yourself as a “___ person“ or as part of the “___ community.” This component of belonging is related to mindset: the static idea of a “___ person” or “the ___ community” can indicate a fixed mindset about who is in that community.
You'll have about 8 minutes to talk with your partner(s) about what resonated in the video.
Make sure one of you is ready report out to the class afterwards (for about 2 minutes) by noticing either:
One theme you had in common, or
One difference.
In this activity, we'll think about the messages we send and their encoding can impact the way they are received.
You may know that computers work in "binary": there are two values in a bit typically represented by a 0 or a 1. All data is ultimately encoded into a sequence of 0s and 1s.
The groups from before will be broken into two sets:
One set will stay in the multipurpose room and the other will go into the brainstorming room.
You'll be encoding messages for groups in the other room.
I'll give instructions to each room.
Due: Monday 10/16 before class
On your web site, create a new reflection entry on belongingess. You may choose whether to use a written (3-4 paragraphs) or recorded (1-3 minute audio/video) format.
Reflect on the role of belongingess in the choices you or your peers make to engage or turn away from something during your/their academic journey (e.g., a course, project, subject, event). Use these prompts to guide your reflection:
Can you think of a time when you made an assumption about your ability to succeed because you did (not) think of yourself as a “_____ person”?
What about a time when you made an assumption about someone else?
Have you ever received help in a way that made you feel like you did not belong?
Have you ever gone out of your way to invite someone’s participation and help them to feel more comfortable?
