Most of my language learning was through immersion in the countries where I lived, including Japan, Korea and China. Living overseas for eight years taught me the value of intercultural competence. The interplay between language and culture is always present, and neither can be truly acquired absent the other. One of the ways I try to bring this conviction to my classroom teaching is by incorporating cultural cues and norms in a way that students can use and reflect on. Below is an intro-level lesson I designed to help students learn basic greetings while also recognizing which greetings are appropriate for different people and why.
