In recent years there has been significant growth in Chinese language teaching materials, especially for college students. Products like the Integrated Chinese series have been a useful starting point for many K-12 Chinese teachers, but I found it difficult to design performance-based assessments that aligned with both the Integrated Chinese curriculum and ACTFL. Eventually I started using Step Up With Chinese, a 3-volume curriculum designed for junior high and high school learners and aligned with the ACTFL Performance Descriptors.
For this project I designed a series of ACTFL-aligned assessments to be used alongside the first eight chapters of volume I of Step Up With Chinese. They are housed in the Canvas LMS and are available for public use. Click the button on the right to access the full assessment suite in Canvas. Below you will also find a video overview, rationale paper and sample screenshots.

Module Overview Page
The home page begins with a general introduction followed by a visual table of contents. Users can click on any lesson to access it directly or simply click "next" at the bottom to view the entire library of assessments in lesson order.
Lesson Overview Page
Each of the eight modules begins with an overview page like the one below with instructions for educators.
"Lesson 2 expands on the introductory remarks learned in the previous lesson to include more detailed personal information including nationality, origin and current residence. The interpretive task has students listen to another series of slightly more detailed audio introductions and fill out a table with the details they hear. The interpersonal task is an information gap in which students exchange info to find out the nationalities of various celebrities. For the presentational task, students create and deliver a visual report introducing 5 celebrities along with their nationalities and places of residence."
Assessment Headliners
After the lesson summary page there are three different assessment pages, each with its own headliner as shown below.
Assessment Content Sample
Under each headliner is a visual sample of the assessment content along with the raw materials such as slides, docs, PDFs, and audio files available for download below as shown. Teachers can use any file "as-is" or adapt it for their own classroom as desired.
