This 6 lesson online unit on communities is designed for a virtual Spanish course for University students at an Intermediate proficiency level, and it is housed in Google Classroom. A variety of technological tools are used to support and foster learning throughout this unit.
Unit goal:
Students will be able to make choices and express preferences about living in different communities as well as make recommendations to others about what to do/not do in their community.
Upon completion of the unit, students will be able to:
1) Identify the characteristics of different communities
2) Compare communities to determine which ones best fit their desired lifestyle
3) Recommend to visitors what to do or not to do in their community
Below you will find information on the online unit, links to the lesson videos and to the Google Classroom itself, as well as to the design rationale.
The design rationale shared here describes my creation of a 6 lesson online unit on communities designed for a virtual Spanish course. The rationale for the incorporation of technological tools is presented in reference to current literature on using technology in language teaching.
As I explain in this paper, "the affordances of technology in supporting learner noticing and ultimately language acquisition are numerous, and as such, a plethora of technological tools are utilized throughout this unit to support learning and to provide opportunities for investigation and communication that cannot be similarly produced in its absence."
