The use of technology within the language classroom has numerous potential affordances. The use of computer-assisted language learning (CALL) is particularly relevant to teaching at this current moment, since many language programs have embraced blended and fully virtual delivery of instruction. Yet even within face-to-face courses, the integration of technology into the classroom is, when used intentionally, an asset to the students' language development. Regardless of the context or tool, the task should always drive decisions about incorporation of technology, rather than the reverse.
For a more thorough presentation of the affordances of CALL and ways to incorporate tools into language teaching, please see my design rationale for the 6 lesson online unit I have designed.
