Through the FLT 881 Technology course, I learned a lot about how technology can advance students' communicative proficiency and intercultural competency. Not only can technology expose students to different manners of living, but can also optimize class time by allowing students to work independently outside the classroom leaving time for communication inside the classroom.
This unit will allow novice level students to begin thinking about their homes for the future and how to find these spaces in any part of the world. The unit will focus first upon room names and main furniture in the target language, then move into using the language to decide which type of home, qualities, and rooms are most important to the student in a new home. Finally, the unit will teach the technology skills necessary to search for homes online through real estate websites. The unit relies heavily upon technology tools, as research over the last decade has shown how these tools can enhance and emphasize language learning in the classroom.
