Designing an assessment that effectively assesses a student in each skill or objective targeted throughout a course is a tough feat that takes time and focus to create. An effective assessment for a foreign language class is one that includes authentic tasks, is reliable, practical, and has high content validity. For these reasons, an Individualized Performance Assessment (IPA) is one of the more effective methods of assessing students. Aside from the effectiveness, the authentic tasks included in this type of assessment gives students a purpose to learn the language.
I created an Integrated Performance Assessment for the novice - high proficiency level. The assessment uses a mix of multiple choice questions and critical thinking open-ended questions for the interpretive listening and reading sections. Also included is a presentational written response section that includes a rubric, and an oral interpersonal section that also includes a rubric.
To the left is the assessment tool document, and below is the interpretive reading document and audio recording for the interpretive listening section along with the answer key for anyone who is interested in using this assessment tool in their class.
