As I currently teach as a Spanish teacher in a rural community and as the only world language teacher in the district, I believe my role is to broaden student's viewpoints past their own lives. Allowing them a space to comfortably compare their own culture with other culture's around the world. When students leave my class, I hope they have learned to critically think about the world through acquiring the Spanish language.
How do I promote proficiency? I believe that focusing on communication in the classroom is incredibly important. Getting students talking and conversing early on is beneficial for the learners in the long run.
How do I engage and motivate learners? I believe that choosing materials and topics that are age-relevant to learners builds leaner autonomy. Also creating a classroom environment that supports learners and is comfortable for each student.
How do I teach grammar and vocabulary? In many language classes I teach grammar and vocabulary when it's necessary for communication. Through form focused instruction, I focus on lexical and grammatical concepts within a communicative context (i.e. for the purpose to improve communication).
How do I raise intercultural awareness? In the past, I taught culture as isolated lessons and not pertaining to the language content. Now, I teach intercultural competence through the language. Weaving pieces of culture through authentic resources in each lesson has opened the door to drastically increasing learner's intercultural awareness through the school year.
