Master's Project for the MA in Foreign Language Teaching
For my Experimential Module, I wanted to create something that would be helpful for teachers struggling to decide what to incorporate into a curriculum. When I began teaching, I had little experience with creating a curriculum. At my first job, there was no curriculum already in place for any of the four levels of Spanish. Being a department of one, it was my job to create curriculum for all four levels. This EM showcases a curriculum grid for a novice-mid to novice-high Spanish course that includes the standards/objectives, essential questions, assessment outlines (for an IPA), and recommended materials for 6 thematic units. Also included is a summative assessment that incorporates elements of an integrated performance assessment with detailed rubrics to assess a learner’s proficiency level according to the ACTFFL proficiency guidelines. Although the intended use for the curriculum is for a Spanish course, it can be easily adapted into other novice level language courses as well. You will find the curriculum grid and assessment below, along with a teacher handout detailing how to use the materials.
You can find the connections of the curriculum guide and all of its elements in this guide above.
Above is a curriculum grid detailing an entire school year long course (about 9 months worth of content) set up by thematic units and designed using backward design. Also included are some authentic materials for instruction and assessment.
The summative assessment for the end of the year is an Integrated Performance Assessment (IPA) style assessment. All materials and rubrics are linked within the assessment for easy access.
