The MHS Digital Arts Program encourages students to be creative in a variety of digital art media, including photography, video, music, illustration, animation and 3D design. In the first year, students will be introduced to software and techniques for making original art in all these different areas, as well as the process of finishing artwork, creating portfolios and websites, and entering their artistic creations into shows and competitions. In the second and third years, students may specialize in their favorite digital media, as they accept internships at local studios, prepare their portfolios for acceptance into competitive art colleges, and continue to enter work into shows and contests, as well as school publications. In the fourth year, students are welcome to focus completely on their portfolio development, or to take the class as Advanced Placement. Students enjoy taking field trips to see art and go to shows in San Francisco and other local cities as often as possible. At the end of each year, student digital artwork is featured in the school-wide MHS Digital Arts Festival, which provides multiple awards in all categories.
The MHS Digital Arts Program boasts a state-of-the-art Mac lab, complete with SLR cameras, studio lights/backdrops, iPads, Wacom tablets, GoPro cameras, a drone, a Viewsonic flat screen, digital music equipment, and access to the complete Adobe Creative Suite and many other creative programs.
The MHS Digital Arts Program is very grateful for generous funding and support from the MPUSD CTE Department, the California Partnership Academy Grant through the Arts-Media-Performance "AMP" Academy, the Arts for Monterey County, the Harry Singer Foundation, the Sunrise Rotary Helping Hand Fund, the Chapman Foundation, the Donors Choose Foundation, the Pacific Grove Art Center, the Scholastic Arts & Writing Foundation, The Cherry Center Gallery of Carmel, The Harrison Memorial Library of Carmel, Carmel Visual Arts, The Carmel Art Association, The Monterey Museum of Art, The Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, The Center for Photographic Art in Carmel, the Sunset Center in Carmel, and the Avery Gallery in Seaside City Hall.
