What is Biotechnology?
Biotechnology is about using living things (bio) as tools (technology) to improve the quality of life for human beings and the environment. This practical, hands-on, two-year lab program applies theory and techniques used in biotechnology to solve real-world problems in healthcare, industry, agriculture, and forensic science.
Students learn lab skills and operating procedures and apply them to challenges such as DNA isolation and analysis, pharmaceutical development, genetic engineering, and cloning. Students also learn how the biotechnology industry works and potential careers related to life science.
In the process, students must consider the legal, social, ethical, and financial dilemmas for human beings and the environment that arise from using technology. Just because we have the capability to develop and utilize new technologies, should we? YOU decide!
Exploration Kits
Early in the year, students collected and inventoried simple materials that became part of their Exploration Kit. Students used the materials in the kit to help demonstrate their understanding of biotechnological principles, concepts, and techniques learned throughout the year.
Virus Cycle Storyboard
Students spent much of the year learning about SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes the disease known as COVID-19. For this assignment, students used objects from their Exploration Kit (see above) to create Virus Cycle Storyboard that visually describes and explains the six step of the SARS-CoV-2 virus cycle. Mask Challenge
Students also learned about personal protective equipment (PPE), with a focus on mask technologies. We examined how masks help slow the spread of SARS-CoV-2, how mask design & materials work together to provide protection, and what makes for a truly effective mask design. Students demonstrated their understanding by constructing functional masks with simple innovative materials from around their home. Masks were evaluated on functionality, simplicity of materials, and stylishness. Scroll down within each document to see their clever creations.
