The Fine Arts department at Thomas Edison High School provides students with a variety of artistic opportunities that can fulfill their two-semester fine arts requirement. These courses will help students develop a range of 21st century creative skills. In addition to beginning, intermediate and advanced level coursework, there are many exceptional opportunities available for students including: Art-a-Whirl; Viva City (downtown library) art show; Yearly mural projects; Artist Residencies, and field trips to museums and local art galleries/studios.

This class is an introduction to a variety of materials or “media”! There will be a wide range of independent projects such as embroidery and making and painting trading cards. The foundations of Art and Design will be covered within the context of art making. Students will acquire the vocabulary and technical skills specific to each medium, and work as artists do: planning, experimenting, revising and self-evaluating. As the semester progresses, students will participate in small critiques, cultivating their evaluative skills.

This class is an introduction to working with clay as a medium. There will be a range of hand building projects, decorative techniques as well as opportunities to try throwing on the wheel. This class expands on what is covered in Ceramics 1 working with clay as a medium. Students will create more complex projects that involve more choice in the way the project is created. More consistent use of the sketchbook for learning, sketching, research and planning will be incorporated throughout the semester. Students will acquire color theory vocabulary and more technical skills specific to ceramics, and work as artists do: planning, experimenting, revising and self-evaluating. As the semester progresses, students will participate in small critiques, cultivating their evaluative skills.

Description:
Applied Arts explores mediums that are often considered outside the realm of fine arts. Art-making opportunities will include weaving, dyeing, and pottery. Students will also study cultural influences on crafts, how they are regarded in today’s society, and the role of crafts in art are explored and discussed.

Course Description:
Students will develop basic drawing skills and techniques including drawing from observation; develop a working visual language and core artistic vocabulary; critique and make revisions to their work; and develop an awareness of good composition. Students will learn and apply the basic principles of color theory; explore a variety of painting media and techniques including watercolor and acrylics. They will use artistic foundations to create and develop quality paintings.

Course Description:
IB Visual Art will familiarize students with skills, techniques, processes and vocabulary with which to approach an in-depth investigation of art. Each student will develop their artistic ideas independently but within a framework of diverse social, cultural and historical context. Students will practice critical analysis of works of art, hone their technical skills and synthesize art research to enhance their artistic production. Working in a process journal documenting ideas, intentions, practice, experimentation, modifications, and reflections is a large part of this class. Much of the work in this class is independent and self-directed, and writing is an integral part of the artistic process.

IB Visual Art Year 2 will continue the development of the portfolio of art and process portfolios created within Year 1. Students will have additional art history requirements with research and creation of artwork inspired by chosen artworks of study. Additionally, students will learn to organize a digital portfolio for submission online for IB Assessments, and will create and host an exhibition to showcase the work created within the 2 year course. Much of the work in this class is independent and self-directed, and writing is an integral part of the artistic process.
Concert Choir - Level 1: beginner friendly, but all are welcome

Course Description: Students in this course will learn choral singing and performance techniques. Singers will learn how to read music and prepare songs for group performance. Students are required to sing during class each day and perform group concerts after school each quarter. No experience necessary.
Concert Band - Level 2: For students whom have had at least one successful year of instrumental study in an ensemble setting

Course Description: Concert Band is a performing ensemble elective that focuses on providing various opportunities of music-making. Students will perform multiple times throughout the year in the styles of the marching arts, traditional band arrangements, small group arrangements, composing/arranging, collaboration with guest artists, and other opportunities on site at Edison High School and off site at various performing venues. Students also have the opportunity to travel with the ensemble.
Jazz Band - Level 2: For students with at least 1 year of study on their instrument. Option for tudents wishing to add IB Music.
Course Duration: Year (meets Tuesdays & Thursdays 7:30-8:30 AM)
Course Description: Jazz Band is a performing ensemble elective that focuses on providing various opportunities of music-making. Students will perform multiple times throughout the year in the styles of the various genres that associate with Jazz music, small group arrangements, composing/arranging, collaboration with guest artists, and other opportunities on site at Edison High School and off site at various performing venues. Students also have the opportunity to travel with the ensemble.
Beginning Drumline - Level 1: All students welcome

Course Description: Beginning Drumline is a performing ensemble elective that focuses on providing various opportunities of music-making. Students will perform two (2) times throughout the year in the traditional core and show styles of drum line on site at Edison High School. Students who perform in both performances AND are in Beginning Drumline for a full year have the opportunity to move into Advanced Drumline.
Advanced Drumline- Level 2: For students with at least 1 year of percussion study or promotion by director

Students will perform multiple times throughout the year in the styles of the marching arts, traditional drumline arrangements, composing/arranging, collaboration with guest artists, and other opportunities on site at Edison High School and off site at various performing venues. Students also have the opportunity to travel with the ensemble.

Course Description: Students will learn the basic aspects of the guitar and different techniques of playing guitar. Students will start with learning how to play melodies followed by a few chords and beginning to read sheet music. They will even get the opportunity to compose their own song. They will play as individuals and as part of a group. This will be the beginning of a lifetime of making music.
Advanced Guitar - For students who have successfully completed Guitar 1.

Beginning Piano - Level 1

Course Description: Students will begin to learn the basic aspects of playing the piano. They will learn the mechanics of how to play the piano, reading sheet music, melodies, and chords. They will play as individuals and as part of a group. This will be the beginning of a lifetime of making music.
Advanced Piano - For students who have successfully completed Piano 1.

Course Description: Students will continue expanding and honing their skills learned from Piano 1. They will learn more music theory and be able to play more complex music in a variety of styles.

Music Lab - Level 1: beginner friendly, but all are welcome

Course Description: This course is for students who want to learn an instrument or play music without the requirement of performing. Students will choose from 3 pathways - New to music (learning an instrument for the first time), Music Pathways (transferring prior music knowledge to a new instrument) or Collaboration (Electronic music, songwriting, and non-traditional ensembles. Learning targets will be co-created with students based on their musical interests. All students will learn standard notation for composition, and practice listening to and writing about music.
World Music- Level 2: All are welcome, music experience suggested
Course Duration: semester
Course Description: This course focuses on providing many opportunities for music exploration. Students will interact with various genres and cultures of music throughout the world based on which semester they attend. Students will interact with the content by watching recorded performances, watching live performances, working with guest artists, interacting with the various instruments and music, and doing their own research. Students will not be graded on performing music but are expected to try instruments, engage with guest artists and attend field trips. Creativity and curiosity are great skills to have in this ethnomusicologist-focused course.
THEATRE
Duration: 1 year
Course Description: Theatre is a practical subject that encourages discovery through experimentation, the taking of risks and the presentation of ideas to others. It results in the development of both theatre and life skills; the building of confidence, creativity and working collaboratively.
The IB Diploma Programme theatre course is a multifaceted theatre-making course of study. It gives students the opportunity to make theatre as creators, designers, directors and performers. It emphasizes the importance of working both individually and collaboratively as part of an ensemble. It offers the opportunity to engage actively in the creative process, transforming ideas into action as inquisitive and productive artists.
Focuses Include: Working with play texts, Examining world theatre traditions, and Collaboratively creating original theatre.
External Assessments: Director's Notebook and a Research Presentation
Internal Assessment: Collaborative Project (create and present an original piece of theatre).
