A resumé
Step Up has two tiers of participation, usually determined by a students' age:
Level 1 Participants
14 or 15 years old by June 1, 2022
paid $12.15/hr
Level 2 Participants
16 - 21 years old by June 1, 2022
paid at least $14.25/hr.
Both Level 1 and Level 2 participants must complete their Summer Work Readiness Training in order to be placed in an internship or participate in the Paid Career Exploration.
Step Up has two unique opportunities in 2022! This year, Step Up is offering participants both paid Internships and paid Career Exploration Summer Opportunities. Limited availability of internships shouldn't stop students from having the opportunity to build career and life skills!
To meet the needs of our young people, Step Up is offering two programs to ensure, even if students don't have an internship, they still can receive paid learning opportunities to boost their skills. Check out the overview of both program styles in this section:
In response to COVID-related limitations, Step Up and partnering employers are offering paid in-person and remote internships.
First priority for internships are Level 2 Step Up participants (more info on Levels 1 and 2 below)
Step Up internships typically fall within one of four Career Fields. Within each career field are a number of different businesses and corporations that students could find themselves working with. Check out each of the fields below, and examples of partnering employers students might work with.
This opportunity is new for Step Up! Students can engage in a paid summer online career exploration program if they complete their assigned training but are not matched to an internship
All participants – regardless of age – who complete the summer career exploration program can earn up to $600 and earn 0.5 elective academic high school credits through the online career exploration program.
The application for Step Up is available to all MPS students living in Minneapolis NOW. The deadline for the application is February 15th, so APPLY SOON! Check out the graphic below to see a timeline of the Step Up application process

The only program requirements are that you are:
a Junior in high school;
on track to graduate;
can have an adjusted school schedule (with less classes) to accommodate your internship hours; and...
are able to work in the U.S
GenesysWorks does not have a GPA requirement.
GenesysWorks' mission is to provide pathways to career success for high school students in through skills training, meaningful work experiences, and impactful relationships.
They do this by engaging with students across 4 pillars:
Skills Training
GenesysWorks participants receive rigorous business technology training, gaining essential skills in the areas of information technology, business operations and professional development.
Meaningful Internships
Students are matched to a paid, year-long internship at a partner company site. Our “earn and learn” approach offers twenty-hour work-weeks while in school.
College & Career Coaching
Participants also receive more than sixty hours of guidance, counseling and planning relative to their future career path. Examples of supports in this area include college selection and applications, certification training and placement, and financial aid assistance.
Alumni Support
Finally, When students join GenesysWorks, they also gain access to a community of support from other GenesysWorks alumni.
Check out the timeline below for an initial breakdown of the GenesysWorks timeline. In the box below the timeline, we'll lay out the particulars around summer training, and the hours that applicants work.
As indicated by the timeline above, students that have applied to GenesysWorks are contacted for interviews in late February and March. Once you've been contacted for an interview, it's in your interest to attend the pre-interview sessions in early March. If, after your interview, it's been decided you're accepted to the program, you'll receive a notice in late April. Congrats!
Skills training takes place over the summer in the month of June. The training is 8 weeks long, and completion of the training is required for students that would like to proceed with their paid internship opportunity.
Finally, internships take place over the course of students' Senior year. Internships are often during the day, and students need to work with their counselor and GenesysWorks advocates to establish a schedule that allows them to balance work and school. Typically, students work approximately 20 hours a week at their assigned internship, similar to the hours maintained with a locally found part-time job.
If you're a Junior interested in working in business and / or IT, there are few opportunities better than GenesysWorks!
