What is your definition of confidence?
I think confidence is the feeling you get when you know that you can do something. It also means supporting yourself and others with positive encouragement.
What is something you have confidence in doing?
I have confidence in playing sports and playing the piano. The sports I am most confident in are soccer, volleyball, basketball, snowboarding, biking, tennis, and golf. I have confidence in playing piano because I have been doing it for a long time.
How has your confidence developed during your sixth grade year?
At the start of 6th grade, I thought confidence meant having to do everything perfectly, making no mistakes, and having amazing grades. I thought that the only way to be confident was to succeed at first. Now that I am nearing the end of 6th grade, I know that confidence means having to believe in yourself first, and if you make a mistake, you can learn from it and do better the next time. I now know that to succeed, you first have to fail. This has helped me a lot in developing my confidence, because now I know that it is okay to make mistakes. An example of this is when I was in 5th grade and still played goalkeeper in soccer. If I let one ball into the goal I would get upset or cry. I would do this because I thought that that meant that I was the reason for us losing, that my team hated me, and that I wasn't good enough. I have overcome this by learning what to do better next time. If I made a mistake and let a ball in, I would know where the opposing team was going to shoot, and where I should dive. What really helped me was my teammates. Whenever I let in a goal, They would comfort me and tell me it was okay.
What can challenges or failures teach us about confidence?
One example of an academic challenge is getting a bad grade on a test. This can help with confidence by teaching me how to learn from my mistakes, and to become more confident in this by helping me to take my time with things. A personal example, is when I did gymnastics, I was not confident in competing because I was afraid I was gonna mess up or not do well. The more I had these bad thoughts about myself the more mistakes I made. I learned that if I put more trust in myself I will not make as many mistakes, and I will in turn gain more confidence.
My Mountain Strong class made posters based off of our grade level lens, which was confidence. Things that give me confidence are my playing sports, playing piano, my friends, my cat, and Taylor Swift. Playing sports gives me confidence, because when I play sports like soccer, I feel so happy and like I can do anything. My teammates also give me confidence by encouraging me and supporting me. Playing piano gives me confidence by showing me that I can do anything if I work hard enough to achieve it. My friends give me confidence by supporting me in anything I do. My cat gives me confidence by giving me something to look forward to when I get home, and he pushes me to keep going. Lastly, Taylor Swift gives me confidence by teaching me how to persevere and keep going even if other people don't support me or agree with me. I also love listening to her music.
I invited Ms. Barton, my elementary school ELA teacher because she has helped me with so many things, and is one of the best teachers I have ever had. At the beginning of the year, I tried to be like this inspiring person in my life by always staying on task, helping as many people as I could, and being a leader. I understood this person in my life to be just my teacher, but since I have gotten out of 5th grade, she has become more of my friend. She has taught me about simple and compound sentences, figurative language, themes, verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, and much more. These are things I can use pretty much every day. I can use them in writing scripts, stories, reports, etc. She also taught me about the habits of heart and mind. I can use these things in real life in things like a college application, a job interview, and even just a school exhibition. Ms. Barton means so much more to me than just a teacher, she is more of a friend, or a person I feel like I can talk to. Every time I see her, she immediately makes me happy. She has a perpetual smile on her face and is always in a good mood. By the end of this year, I think that I have developed personality traits like Ms. Barton’s. I have become more respectful towards teachers, I have been kind to mostly everyone, I try to help other classmates as much as I can, and I am focusing on keeping everyone on task all while maintaining a positive attitude. As you can see, Ms. Barton is an amazing teacher who will inspire more students, and who will always be my favorite teacher ever.
