What is VALUE
Value refers to the lightness and darkness of a colour. Value is also known as “Tone”.
Below is a value/tonal scale showing a gradient of tones from darkest to lightest.
Words to use when talking about VALUE
How can we describe the different values/tones in an artwork/picture/scene?
Dark tones - the darkest areas (e.g. blacks)
Mid tones - the tones in the middle of the value scale
Light tones - the brightest areas (e.g. whites)
Additional words to use when talking about light and shadow:
Highlights - areas that reflect the light source and are completely white
Direct light - area of the object facing the light
Halftone - a neutral point between light and shadows
Core shadow - the darkest part of the shadow where neither direct light nor reflected light can reach
Cast shadow - the silhouette that the object projects on a surface
