Question: Some students prefer teachers who are friendly and humorous; others want teachers to be strict and firm. Which do you prefer and why?

It is compulsory for children in Singapore to go to school and complete their education, at least up till their ‘N’ or ‘O’ level examinations. Waking up early in the morning and going to school can be tiring as you have about seven hours of learning to do. But, having teachers who are friendly and humorous makes everything a bit easier. Students find lesson time more fun and engaging, students are more likely to tell their teachers their struggles and most importantly, students feel like coming to school more often.

Most of the time, students find that lessons taught in school are boring, but having friendly and humorous teachers makes lessons fun and engaging. For example, friendly and humorous teachers may sometimes come up with games to teach a topic. This makes it easier for students to learn and they are more attentive during lessons. Sometimes if a teacher is strict and firm, students tend to fall asleep during lessons as the lesson is too boring and not engaging. Therefore, I prefer teachers who are friendly and humorous.

Having friendly and humorous teachers allows students to joke with their teacher. Students also feel more comfortable to talk to them. If a student is struggling in any topic or is having troubles in school or at home, they are more likely to tell their teacher. For example, if a student needs clarification on a topic, the student will not feel ashamed or afraid to ask the teacher for help. If a student is being bullied, they will feel more comfortable to approach the teacher to resolve the issue. Therefore, I prefer teachers who are friendly and humorous.

Lastly, having friendly and humorous teachers makes students feel like coming to school more often. For example, some students skip school as they would rather stay at home and play computer games than sit in a classroom and listen to a strict and firm teacher teach. Having a friendly and humorous teacher encourages students to come to school to learn as lessons are more interesting.

In conclusion, I prefer to have friendly and humorous teachers as lessons are more interesting, I can approach my teacher for help when needed and I feel like coming to school more often.
