Inside the Classroom

"Invictus" by William Ernest Henley

Ever wondered where our class motto, "I am the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul" comes from? It's actually a line from a famous poem that inspired Nelson Mandela, the former President of South Africa, who was previously imprisoned for 18 years because of his struggle for multiracial equality in a country deeply divided by racial hatred and discrimination. Its message of hope in the face of overwhelming odds and difficulties has also given courage to many others, including myself, and I hope that it will inspire you to be resilient in your various journeys throughout life as well.

Out of the night that covers me,

Black as the pit from pole to pole,

I thank whatever gods may be

For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced nor cried aloud.

Under the bludgeonings of chance

My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears

Looms but the Horror of the shade,

And yet the menace of the years

Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll,

I am the master of my fate,

I am the captain of my soul.
