Take time to speak with the individual student alone
Assure student that everyone gets stressed/frustrated/worried/ overwhelmed
Teach the student to identify when they are overwhelmed
E.g. clench fists, breathe heavily, cry, sweat
Teach relaxation techniques to use in class:
Deep Breathing / Box Breathing / Count to 10 / Take a sip of water
Write a note / Draw / Color / Scribble / Read
Take a break – movement break, toilet break
Practice the first time with the student or class
Encourage students to practice relaxation techniques when they are upset
Establish where, when, and how students will initiate and carry out a break to relax:
Establish a location in the classroom where the students can take a break
