On the third day of our students' overseas learning journey in Vietnam, we set off to the Mekong Delta for an immersive cultural experience. We began with a 2.5-hour bus ride, followed by a transfer to a boat that took us to Cai Be Town. As we cruised deeper into the countryside, we stopped at a local workshop where students learned how traditional Vietnamese delicacies like rice paper, pop-rice, and coconut candy are made. The hands-on demonstration highlighted the craft and care that goes into creating these treats. Afterward, the students strolled through a fruit plantation, sampling fresh fruits and gaining insights into local agricultural practices. It was a refreshing connection to the land and its resources.
Next, we took a boat ride to our homestay on An Binh Island for lunch. It was a delightful spread of local cuisine, offering the students a taste of the region. Ms Cheak led a practical lesson on water quality, testing the Mekong River for temperature, turbidity, and pH levels. This hands-on activity connected science with the environment around us.
After a brief rest, the students changed for fishing. Initially, they faced some challenges, but through teamwork, they successfully caught plenty of fish for dinner. After a quick wash-up, the group came together to cook their catch under the guidance of the locals. It was a fun, collaborative effort that symbolised their journey thus far. The evening concluded with a local performance, where our students also shared two performances singing Singapore’s National Day songs. This cultural exchange was a perfect ending to a day filled with learning and connection.
Day three in the Mekong Delta provided not just lessons in tradition and geography, but also unforgettable experiences and memories that will last a lifetime. We look forward to what tomorrow will bring!
