Wrap Up Review
WHAT YOU SAY: Good morning everyone! So to start, we are going to go around and say our names and tell me what is your favorite subject in school? Who wants to go first?
OK great! Let's get up and sing our THEME SONG!
WHAT YOU SAY: Great Job Friends! Let's move on to what we discussed last time. Who remembers What a Life Skill is?
(let's kids answer)
Life skills is a term used to describe a set of basic skills acquired through learning and/or direct life experience that enable individuals and groups to effectively handle issues and problems commonly encountered in daily life.
Life skills help us succeed in life. Life skills help us set & achieve goals, solve problems, respect one another and more!
A life skill can be as simple as learning to do your own laundry or as big as learning to be respectful.
THIS MONTH'S LIFE SKILL IS...
WHAT YOU SAY: Well we all know what having a POSITIVE ATTITUDE MEANS. But WHAT IS PERSERVERANCE? Does anyone know?
(let kids answer)
Definition: persistence in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.
What is persistence?
Definition: continuing to try
So in other words, Perseverance is continuing to try even if you have some difficulties. This is such a great life lesson because we all make mistakes. We are all going to fail at things, but we must keep trying and keep moving forward to achieve success.
Now let's watch this short video on perseverance.
WHAT YOU DO: Share your screen
WHAT YOU SAY: So friends, what did you think about that video?
Now, I'm going to share my screen with you. Would anyone like to read this quote out loud?
WHAT YOU SAY: Does anyone know who said this?
Do you know who Michael Jordan is?” He is one of the most successful athletes in the world and spent 15 seasons playing basketball in the NBA, winning six national championships and three MVP trophies.
Did you know that Michael Jordan did not make his high school basketball team? What if he had let that stop him? What if he had not per-se- vered?
So what are you thoughts on what this quote means? How could it connect to your life?
WHAT GOES ALONG WITH PERSEVERANCE, we are also talking about having a POSITIVE ATTITUDE. Who can tell me what it means to have a POSITIVE ATTITUDE?
Let's watch this short movie about having positive attitude...
WHAT YOU SAY: Wasn't that cute! What did you think about that video? Did you learn anything?
Let's move on to an activity...
WHAT YOU NEED: Glass, Pitcher filled with water
WHAT YOU SAY: Let's Define positive thinking. (For example, “Choosing to pay attention to positive thoughts and dismissing negative ones.”)
OK I'm going to fill a glass halfway with water.
Is the glass half-empty or half-full?
WHAT YOU SAY: So, viewing the glass as “half-full” is a positive outlook and viewing the glass as “half-empty” is more of a negative outlook. Having a positive attitude doesn’t mean ignoring troubles. It means focusing on the good and not concentrating on the bad.
(Transition) Now we're going to dive a little bit deeper.
WHAT YOU SAY: We are going to watch a short lesson on Thinking Positively.
WHAT YOU SAY: .
Having a positive attitude is very important in life. Thinking positively can be hard to do sometimes, but when we think positively, we feel better about ourselves. Often, people who think positively are able to experience more success in life than those who are always negative.
Why do you think people who think positively are often more successful? (when you are thinking positively, you start to SEE the positive things in life)
Positive people are often happier than those people who think negative thoughts more frequently.
So kids, “How can the brain grow?” (Give students a few minutes to respond)
We’re going to learn to make our brains grow through positive self-talk!
I'm going to talk about 2 different mindsets:
Fixed Mindset—the belief that one has traits and talents that are fixed and cannot be changed, and that success is created through talent alone.
Growth Mindset—the belief that one can become smarter and improve through hard work; can learn, change, and develop new skills, and be better equipped to handle setbacks.
So for example, saying “I stink at math” or “I can’t do this.” Is that an example of Fixed Mindset or Growth Mindset?
How do you think we could change that thought to a Growth Mindset? “I can work to improve my math skills” or “I will try.”)
Questions for Assessment
Do you have more negative thoughts or positive thoughts? After today, do you think you can change these negative thoughts into positive ones?
Have you ever been around someone who is always negative? How did it make you feel? (bad, sad, depressed)
What can you do in the future to help make your brain stronger and smarter? (be more positive - catch yourself if you are thinking negatively, change it to something positive)
OK - now let's move on to our Group Activity...
POSITIVE THOUGHTS AND NEGATIVE THOUGHTS ACTIVITY SHEETS:
WHAT YOU SAY: Pull out your Positive Thoughts Activity Sheet. Who would like to start reading the list of Positive Thoughts?
How did that make you feel to read those words? (good, happy, peaceful)
Now pull out the Negative Thoughts Activity Sheet. Who would like to start reading this list?
How did these words made you feel?
What is the difference between the two sets of words that you just read? How did they make you feel differently? (one good, one bad)
NOW I WANT YOU TO RIP UP THE NEGATIVE THOUGHTS SHEET! GO AHEAD! RIP IT UP INTO TINY PIECES! Now, stand up and throw all those tiny pieces, those negative thoughts, into your garbage!!!!!!! I'll wait for you - go ahead!
Are there some positive thoughts that you have never had about yourself before?
Do you think these comments will help you think more positively about yourself in the future?
I'd like you to hang the Positive Thoughts Activity Sheet in your room somewhere as a reminder to be positive!
Thinking positively about ourselves is something that is very important. When we think positively, it makes us feel better about ourselves. When people say positive things about us, it makes us feel good. My challenge for you tonight is to go home and to say one positive thing to each member of your family and see how they react.
That was fun and you all did great! Now it's time for ...
WHAT YOU SAY: OK Kids, it's time to move it! Let's stand up and show your dance moves!
WHAT YOU DO: Stand up, dance along with kids.
(an opportunity to review this month's Life Skill and apply it to their lives)
WHAT YOU SAY: It was so much fun to be with you today. Next time we're together, I want you to tell me the ways you were positive and persevered this month! Here's one way I'm going to practice having positivity and perseverance this month...
Does anyone have anything else they would like to add?
Now we are going to sign off.....
WHAT YOU DO: Sign off however you choose...
