Tell me your name and one thing you are good at and one thing you cannot do.
I'll go first, I'm good at games, but I'm a terrible singer.
OK great! You know what's next right?? Our Theme Song!
Share screen and encourage kids to sing along.
WHAT YOU SAY: Great Job Friends! Let's move on to what we discussed last time. Who remembers What a Life Skill is?
(Let's kids answer.)
Life skills is a term used to describe a set of basic skills acquired through learning and/or direct life experience that enable individuals and groups to effectively handle issues and problems commonly encountered in daily life.
Life skills help us succeed in life. Life skills help us set & achieve goals, solve problems, respect one another and more!
A life skill can be as simple as learning to do your own laundry or as big as learning to be respectful.
THIS MONTH'S LIFE SKILL IS...
WHAT YOU SAY: Coping sKills are just big words for how we handle things when we are having a bad day and things are not going our way. How we cope in bad situation.
Let's go to our Opening Activity and learn more about what this means...
WHAT YOU SAY: Who has ever has a bad day? I know I have.
Raise your hand and tell me about a time you have a really bad day.
(Let kids answer.)
Then ask kids if they have ever heard of stress or can explain in their own words what stress means.
After taking a few responses, explain that stress is when a person feels worried about things in his or her life or is uncomfortable with a situation.
Tell kids that stress and worry are emotions that can have both physical and mental effects on a person.
A physical effect is when a person’s body feels sick or bad, and a mental effect is when a person feels sad or upset in his or her mind.
Let's watch a video about a girl named Rebecca and her NO! NO! NO! Day where everything goes wrong...
WHAT YOU SAY: Wow, Rebecca had a very bad day!
Let's talk about what Rebecca did and how she could have acted differently.
What are somethings Rebecca did badly (Bad coping skills...).
Take answers from kids.
Let's talk about what could have been a better way to cope...
Review the following...
Shouts at her brother, cried at breakfast, shouted and threw her shoes off, shouted again at the grocery store.
She could have talked to her mother about her brother, her breakfast and her new shoes.
Talking about our feelings is one of the best COPING SKILSS we have.
Shouting and raising our voices are not Coping Skills.
Next time you are mad and want to shout at someone, what can you do instead?
That's right! Talk to them instead.
She was mean to her friends when they were playing. She was rude at ballet. She complained a lot! She complained dinnertime, bedtime and her bath time!
Are being mean, rude and complaining good Coping Skills?
No! What could Rebecca have done instead? She could have given her self a timeout. Take a few minutes and be alone. Take a deep breath. Count to ten.
Taking a time out before you say or or do something that is hurtful is a great Coping Skill.
Now let's talk about what Rebecca did right.
She calmed down and she apologized to her mom.
Another great Coping Skills is so simple.
Stop, calm down, and think before you act.
WHAT YOU SAY: OK guys, let's talk about your very worst day.
Let kids volunteer. You can share first to get things started.
Let a couple of kids share and ask everyone to suggest a Coping Skill that would have helped the situation.
WHAT YOU SAY: You guys are getting really good at so let's get up and move around a little. Who's ready for a dance party?
WHAT YOU SAY: OK Kids, it's time to move it! Let's stand up and show your dance moves!
WHAT YOU DO: Share your screen, stand up, and dance along with kids.
(An opportunity to review this month's Life Skill and apply it to their lives)
WHAT YOU SAY: We learned a lot today about Coping sKills.
Who remembers 3 easy Coping Skills?
Let kids answer.
Talk to someone.
Take a timeout.
Stop, calm down, and listen before you at.
I hope you have a really really good day today.
But remember on your next NO! NO! NO! REALLY REALLY BAD DAY , you can use the Coping Skills you learned today.
SEE YOU NEXT TIME!
