WHAT YOU SAY: Good morning everyone! So to start, we are going to go around and say our names and state one thing that you like to eat. I'll start. My name is ________________ and I really like _______________. Now it's your turn.
OK great! Let's stand up and sign our Theme Song!
WHAT YOU DO: Share your screen in the next text box
WHAT YOU SAY: Great Job Friends! Let's move on to what we discussed last time. Who remembers What a Life Skill is?
(let's kids answer)
Life skills is a term used to describe a set of basic skills acquired through learning and/or direct life experience that enable individuals and groups to effectively handle issues and problems commonly encountered in daily life.
Life skills help us succeed in life. Life skills help us set & achieve goals, solve problems, respect one another and more!
A life skill can be as simple as learning to do your own laundry or as big as learning to be respectful.
THIS MONTH'S LIFE SKILL IS...
WHAT YOU SAY: WHAT IS RESPECT?
Respect is a word that you have all probably heard before. It is a word that your teachers and parents use a lot. You probably have heard it used by your coaches or maybe from other adults. Raise your hand if you have heard the word respect before. What do you think it means?
(let kids explain what they think RESPECT means)
Definition: RESPECT is a person's feelings and/or actions toward other people, ourselves and things.
Respect is defined as to feel or show esteem or honor for someone or something. An example of respect is being quiet in a church. An example of respect is truly listening to someone speak. An example of respect is walking around, rather than through, protected wilderness.
Now let's go to our Opening Activity...
WHAT YOU NEED: SHOWING RESPECT Activity Sheet, pencil
WHAT YOU SAY: So, before we get to our lesson, let's see how much you already know about RESPECT. Pull out your activity sheet and a pencil. How can you show respect? Write down ways that you think you can show respect at School, at Home and in the Community. I'll give you all about 3 minutes.
WHAT YOU DO: Share your screen in the next text box
WHAT YOU SAY: Now, would someone like to share ways they believe they can show respect? Anyone else?
Those are all great ideas!
(Transition) Now we're going to dive a little bit deeper.
WHAT YOU SAY: We are going to watch a short lesson on RESPECT .
WHAT YOU DO: Share your screen in the next text box
WHAT YOU SAY: Let's talk about the ways you can be respectful.
#1 reminded us that one way to show respect is to accept NO for an answer. For example, If you want to go to the park, but your Mom says NO. Accepting that and moving on is a way you can show respect. If you talk back to your Mom and give her reasons you should go to the park, that is disrespectful. So, accepting NO when you are told is one way you can be respectful. Now can you share some ways that you have accepted NO for answer?
#2 was having EMPATHY. That's a big word. Empathy means that I think about how my words and actions will make other people feel. Is there a time when you showed EMPATHY?
#3 follow the rules! Do you go to bed on time? Do you clean your room right away when your Mom asks? Does your teacher have to remind you to turn in your homework? Following the rules is clear way to show RESPECT. Do you follow the rules? Give me an example of a time you showed respect by following the rules...
You can show RESPECT to People, Places and Things. For example, I can show RESPECT to Mrs. Buschmann by not interupting her when she is speaking. I can show RESPECT to places by using my marker on my paper not on my walls. And, I can show RESPECT for things by putting my pencils in my pencil box and closing it, and not leaving them spread out on my desk.
Does anyone have any more ideas about how to show respect?
1. RESPECT BINGO
WHAT YOU DO: You're going to ask the kids different ways to be respectful. Make a list of the kids' ways to be respectful while the kids fill in their bingo cards.
WHAT YOU SAY: We are going to play RESPECT Bingo! Pull out your bingo cards and a pencil and let's get started! The first person with 5 in a row WINS. OK guys, name one way you can be respectful. You can use your Activity Sheet from our Opening Activity. Now everyone write that word on 2 of your spaces. I'm going to write it on my index card. We are going to make a list of at least 15 ways you can be respectful.
WHAT YOU DO: As kids share their ideas, write each one down on an index card. Encourage kids to fill in the empty squares with ideas from the cards. If necessary, kids can use the same idea for multiple squares. When kids finish filling in their bingo card, play a game of Bingo.
WHAT YOU SAY: The middle space is a free space.
I'm going to Shuffle the index cards.
Now I'm going to Draw a card and read it to the group.
Players put an X on the RESPECT trait on your bingo card that matches the index card drawn.
Now I will Shuffle the index card back into the pile.
Draw the next card and read it to the group.
Players put an X in the square on their bingo card that matches the index card drawn.
Players can only place one X for each card called.
(If a kid wrote “open door for friend” in three squares, the “open door for friend” index card must be drawn three times to mark all three squares.
The first player with five in a row wins. When you have 5 in a row, stand up and shout out RESPECT!
WHAT YOU SAY: So friends, there are so many ways you can show that you are respectful at home, at school and in our community.
Each of you can be respectful. Look for ways this month that you can show you are respectful. Watch people's reaction. You will be amazed that some people will notice and appreciate you even more because you are respectful!
Now let's watch a short video about the word on the street "RESPECT"
