Maori Perspectives

Māori Perspectives honours the status of tangata whenua in this land and the value of indigenous knowledge and wisdoms in enriching and guiding learning and action.

Maori Perspectives is covered in a range of ways at Milford School.

Examples of how we show Maori Perspectives around the school; our amazing Kapa Haka Ropu, Artworks around the school, Classroom signs, Native Gardens, Learning about tikanga and Te Reo being spoken in classes.

Collaborative Art Murals

In 2016 each year group created a collaborative mural for display in our school grounds celebrating Maori Perspectives.

Each mural represents a different aspect of New Zealand culture - but they work well together and look amazing on our school boundary fences.

Pou Whenua

In 2018-2019 our Milford School pou whenua were designed by a local sculptor, with ideas from children out of the old pohutukawa tree. They are short in height so that they can be seen and have meaning from a child's perspective.

They are now in a proud position in front of our newly finished 'pohutukawa' building.

We had a powhiri to officially open the building and the pou were blessed by our local kaumatua.

Kapa Haka Ropu

Milford School have an amazing Kapa Haka Ropu lead by Louise Lavulo.

They have taken centre stage in school powhiri's welcoming visitors to our school as well as opening assemblies, concerts and productions.

Each year they get to represent Milford at the Onepoto Festival - they always do us proud.
