Course Purpose and Overview

Midwives strive to enact evidence-informed practice (EIP), or commonly referred to as evidence based care. As such it is important to have tools in order to understand the statistical analyses which occur in research studies. The course introduces the common statistical analysis seen in research papers and gives students an understanding into the different types of tests, their differing usages and common concerns around statistical analysis.

Specific Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, students will:

• Have a working understanding of basic accounting methods

• Demonstrate the ability to calculate percentages, ratios and probability

• Understand relative risk and odds ratio

• Demonstrate the use and interpretation of various kinds of graphs commonly used in research

• Have an understanding of sample populations in research, the selection methods of sample populations and the limitations of each

• Have a working understanding of measures of central tendency and be able to identify similarities, differences, and strengths and weaknesses

• Understand measures of spread

• Understand normal distributions and standard deviations

• Have a working understanding of confidence intervals and there relevance in research

• Understand methods of comparing samples • Have a working understanding of regression analysis

• Understand and describe the relationship (or lack of) between correlation and causation in data sets

• Be able to identify hypotheses and null hypotheses in research
