Course Purpose and Objectives

This course prepares students with the foundational skills necessary for successful written communication as a student and

professional midwife. Course topics include basic grammar and punctuation, use of research tools, basic writing skills, and will require

students to identify and use appropriate tone and language for various audiences and intents. There is a strong focus on development

of proficiency in using APA style and format that can be applied in future MCU classes immediately upon completion of the course.

SPECIFIC LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

At the completion of this course, the students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills in the following areas:

● Demonstrate and employ correct grammar, usage, punctuation, and spelling

● Compose orderly and lucid writing in multiple styles for various audiences:

o Expository and persuasive writing for a general audience

o Expository and persuasive writing for a professional audience

o Appropriate communication in the online environment

o Efficient and effective communication for internal and external audiences

● Summarize, analyze, and connect research in original writing

● Revise, edit, and evaluate the writing of self and others

● Use a variety of written formats valuable for midwives, including:

o research article, including summary and review
