Course Purpose and Objectives
This course will inform students about culturally significant impacts on breastfeeding/chestfeeding, physiology of human lactation, and support/management of normal lactation.
SPECIFIC LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the completion of this course, the students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills in the following areas:
● Understands cultural attitudes, medical practices, or technological innovations, that may have undermined a mother’s confidence & commitment in breastfeeding/chestfeeding and how can you help her restore it.
● Understands anatomy and physiology of lactation
● Understands physiology of suckling and normal infant behavior
● Understands how to conduct a breast assessment
● Knows how to assist a mother with initiating breastfeeding/chestfeeding
● Understands problems that may occur with breastfeeding/chestfeeding and how to manage (Midwives College of Utah, 2021-g, p. 4)
