This training guides school teams through the I-MTSS framework, a comprehensive and equitable approach for intentionally integrating Academic (MTSS-A) and Social-Emotional-Behavioral (MTSS-B/PBIS) systems. Teams will compare current frameworks, plan for comprehensive data-driven decision-making, design an integrated continuum of research-informed practices, and develop integrated teaming and coaching structures for sustained, scaled implementation.
I-MTSS training emphasizes the "how and what" of integration. While it provides the roadmap, a robust I-MTSS and the time required to achieve your intended outcomes from integration are built upon high-fidelity foundations. Therefore, schools should continue to engage in specific Tier 1 or Tier 2 PBIS Team training to ensure their SEB framework is implemented with fidelity.
Upcoming Trainings:
$3,600 per school team registration
Each offering is a three-day training; attendance is recommended for all days.
Fall Cohort
Nov 17-19, 2026 from 8:30am-12:30pm CST
Winter Cohort
Mar 2-4, 2027 from 8:30am-12:30pm CST
For effective capacity building, each school should consider having these functions represented:
1) Building Tier I team members as defined in TFI 1.1:
Tier I coach
School administrator with full implementation authority
Family and community voice representative(s)
Additional team members who are able to provide: (a) applied behavioral expertise, (b) coaching expertise, (c) knowledge of student academic and behavior patterns, (d) knowledge about the operations of the school across grade levels and programs, and (e) student representation for high schools
2) Individuals representing Academic MTSS Systems with expertise and knowledge of implementation (e.g. Instructional coaches, grade level/PLC coaches, Interventionists, department heads, etc.)
3) Individuals that represent roles supporting advanced tiers:
Tier 2/Tier 3 Coach(es)
Special Education Teachers
Nurses
Clinicians (Social Workers, Psychologists, Counselors), both school-based and if in partnership, community-based
Team will:
Ensure a common understanding of the core features of I-MTSS
Assess current status and effectiveness of Social Emotional Behavioral (SEB) and Academic Practices in place across tiers.
Map available progress monitoring data, and outcome data, for practices.
Reflect on and organize feedback for data system enhancements
Assess, and adjust where necessary, current teaming structures and responsibilities across three tiers, and both domains
Additional data exploration
Review multi-tiered and grade-level teaming structures to further integrate MTSS
Understand Team meeting procedures for more effective meetings
Action Plan: Identify a common set of priorities for each level (HS, MS, ES, EC) to address
Schools currently implementing separate Academic MTSS (MTSS-A) and Social-Emotional-Behavioral MTSS (MTSS-B), such as the PBIS framework, should consider merging these systems into an Integrated Multi-Tiered System of Supports (I-MTSS). The intentional integration of MTSS-A and MTSS-B honors the strengths of each traditionally separate system and aligns language for greater efficiency among educators. Integration is particularly beneficial for students with co-occurring difficulties in both academic and SEB domains, as their needs cannot be adequately addressed without paying attention to the connection and interaction between these traditionally separate systems. More directly, academics affects behavior, and behavior affects academics.
