Claim: This aprt of the lesosn allows for students to say what they belive and asnwer questions. This should also be an enaging portion of the lesson!
Evidence: This is the portion of the lesson where information is brought upon to help strengthen students claims. This is where research and findings take place.
Reasoning: This is where students show what they know and explain the why or how of their claim. This is where the lesson wraps up!
Topic: Earth and Human Activities Weather
Grade: Kindergarten
Type: ESS
Claim: Creating a claim can be challenging for young children. To teach children how to make a claim, explain what a claim is. Allow students to start off small by making a "claim" of what they predict the weather to be tomorrow. Students can go around the room and explain why and what they predict the weather to be like tomorrow. Students and teachers can also reflect back on what the weather looked like in previous days to help support their claim.
Evidence: As a class students can explore the local weather channel and talk about the people who help us predict and stay on top of the weather. During this the teacher can explain why weather forecasting is important and can help us stay safe in case of extreme weather such as snow, rain, hurricanes, tornadoes etc. https://youtu.be/ZfamR09Jklw Students and teachers could watch the video linked to learn more about weather and how we as people can prepare based upon what the weather is forecasted as.
Reasoning: Weather Activity Pack
Students could then create their own weather report for the weather today! This will allow studnets to show evidence that support their claim about weather predictions and how weather affects us. This allows for creativity and is fun an interactive without challenging students to much, it is a good way to wrap up the lesson and see what they have learned.
This is a good example of a CER lesson because it has all aspects and encourages stduents to think critically, while also allowing creativity and personal exploration
I made this lesson because I think studnets in kindergarten love talking about things they can relate to! Most of all students have heard about weather, the news and checking the forecast. Students have background knowledge on this topic and could have a lot of good insight on it
The cross- cutting skill focused on is cause and effect. Students can see that if the weather predicts it is going to be rainy, it is important to pack and umbrella, this lesson teacher hard science skills, but also life skills children need to develop!
This lesson includes all of the four C's. Students can communicate and collaborate in a group setting, have creativity when creating their own weather forecast and critical thinking through predictions and claims.
This lesson could be differentiated through only have some studnets draw their predictions where others have to label and draw out all predications
